EPSOM MENTAL HEALTH WEEK
Here are the notes from the meeting on 20 May. Please accept my apologies if I have left out a vital point or put you down for something for which you did not volunteer! The critical part of the minutes are probably at the end: we have had to change the dates of many of the meetings, and the revised times are on page 2.
So, to begin!

YOUNG PEOPLE. Definite bookings for drama/talks:
Tuesday 7 October 4.15pm Rainbows at St Barnabas
Thursday 9 October 9am Stamford Green School
Friday10 October 9am Epsom Primary School
Also, Friday 10 evening – Sheila King to liaise with Uniformed Organisations re possible meeting.
Ongoing connections with NESCOT and University of Creative Arts re involvement in the week.
Tricia Coleman contacting the remaining Schools and Colleges.
Becky Owen has actors for the drama and a possible director/stage manager. She will be attending the drop ins at the Brickfield Centre and St Barnabas to gain ideas, and speaking to Liz Etgrave and Ken Watts from CAMHS to ensure that the drama is followed up with professional support and advice. Surrey Young Carers should also be able to provide support.
CAMHS are to be invited to contact Kingswood House School, who would like an event during the Summer term. -
OPENING EVENT. Pippa Baines is negotiating with Jimmy White. She will look into the possibility of a carnival procession, including Asian dance, from the town centre to the opening ceremony – 12noon 5 October at St Barnabas, with lunch. Pippa and Narinder Ranger both have access to snooker tables if Jimmy White is available.

CRACKING UP – stand up comedy will be performed in the Studio at Leatherhead Theatre on 9 October. It was agreed to advertise this in EMHW publicity and hire a coach from Epsom to the theatre.

SUNTRAP – folk group. Paul Thompson to arrange time. Venue – St Barnabas.

MENTAL HEALTH FILMS AT THE ODEON CINEMA Final call for film titles. Narinder Ranger and Alex Martin to email ideas for Asian Mental Health films.

HISTORY PROJECT Bourne Hall History Group is willing to lend their exhibition to the week, and Bourne Hall Archive happy to help with research.

Paul Thompson to write to EPSOM BOOKSHOPS re sales of MH books, displays/advertising EMHW. Meeting also agreed that Mrs Coates, survivor of childhood abuse, be invited to speak and sign her book during the week.
Sheila King to contact the library, which has already agreed to produce a display of MH books, re an exhibition during EMHW. -
ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY to be asked by Sheila King if EMHW can use its caravan as a display/information centre in Epsom Market Place for the week. Sheila will also provide ‘score your stress/challenging stigma’ quizzes to attract passers-by, and will check with the COUNCIL re using the caravan and advertising the week in the Town Hall.

GP surgeries. Ashley centre practice is very happy to advertise the week, thanks to Kathy Curnow.

THE SAMARITANS would like to provide an exhibition and take a pro- active role in the week.

SPIRITUALITY AND RELIGION All the faith groups are being kept informed about the week and invited to take part. A MH prayer labyrinth is being designed by Sharon Seal and Anne Richardson. There will be space for quiet prayer, thought and reflection at St Barnabas throughout the week. Prayer support before and during the week is being organised by Jo Campbell and everybody, of any or no faith, is welcome to join in. Hopefully, there will be people available during the week should anybody wish to speak of spiritual matters.

HELP CENTRE Pippa Baines has organised a stall, to be resourced by MH professionals able to answer any questions, for Wednesday 8 October at St Barnabas.

PRISONS AND PROBATION OFFICERS Initial contact made with prisons but more work to be done. Sue Thompson to be involved.

TEESHIRTS/SWEAT SHIRTS Revised design being prepared.

PUBLICITY Many thanks to Glyn Jenkins of Katalysis Net Ltd for the excellent logo and flier. David Price, Communications Officer with Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SABP) willing to liaise with the press and media, including Radio Jackie, Southern Counties, Radio Sunrise etc., and provide other help.

SURAE ASIAN DROP IN at Acer House to have an open meeting on Wednesday 8 October, probably to include snooker, meditation and yoga, music, an Indian lunch, a display, and time to look at bereavement and psychological issues from an Asian perspective.

ISLAMIC SOCIETY to be invited to host (a) meeting(s) at their new premises.

Alex Martin to contact SABP outreach worker to GYPSY/TRAVLLERS.

Sheila King to liaise with RAINBOW CENTRE re display/leaflets in its over 55’s centre.

Tricia Coleman to contact some of the larger STORES and BUSINESSES for funding, in cash or kind.

Jackie Clark to provide ‘CARERS PACKS’ for events.

Connection to be made with the Matron at the DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY re an exhibition in the foyer during the week. Liaison also required with EPSOM GENERAL HOSPITAL.

PHARMACY team from SABP willing to provide exhibition and talks. Volunteer required to make connection with Epsom’s CHEMISTS.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL issues – team from SABP to be contacted.

Numerous offers of EXHIBITIONS and TALKS have been received. Further specific details hopefully available at the next meeting.

Rupert Lection to provide information about some of the vast range of HEALING ARTS currently available.

Connections to be made to CAFES and RESTAURANTS. Green Man in the Market Place particularly noted as a place of compassion. Volunteer(s) also required to make connections with the PUBS!

Paul and Sue Thompson have worked hard trying to get some FAMOUS PEOPLE to EMHW. They brought a kind letter from Clarence House – unfortunately HRH is booked until ’09. They will also book EVERGREEN THEATRE COMPANY (run by adults with Learning Disabilities who produce soMinutes from our meetingme brilliant work).

Volunteer required to make connections with HAIRDRESSERS, who so often provide a listening ear.

DEBT Sheila King to make connection with Pauline and George at the Town Hall about some work they did in 2006. CAB specialist MH advisers recognised for the excellent work they do: they hope to take part in EMHW.

Connection to be made with SERENA POWYS, Community Development Officer, at the Town Hall.

Advice to be taken re what material, if any, needs to be TRANSLATED and into what languages.
