EPSOM MENTAL HEATH WEEK 10-16 OCTOBER 2010

NOTES FROM MEETING ON MONDAY 22 MARCH 2010

1.     We began by sharing what we may offer during EMHW. Ideas included carer support, handing out leaflets, spiritual care, reflexology, gardening talks, the stress of long-term unemployment, linking into the BME community, befriending.

2.     The Bald Statements exhibition from 28th June to 30th July will need some volunteers. Please email Kirstie (Kirstie@lovemelovemymind.org.uk) if you can help, giving the day and times you are available.

3.     Beginning the week with a “splash” was discussed. What would be appropriate for Epsom, with its history of mental health care, racing and as a health spa? An ongoing discussion.

4.     We took to heart the research which shows that “mental” can be a very off-putting word for young people. Jackie Clark did some serious thinking on the way home and came up with the following.  Thank you, Jackie. Comments gratefully received:

Our Mind Matters (or “minds matter”) Week from the 10th – 16th October 2010.

5.     The PALS office is researching the possibility of an information leaflet for people who do not know how to get help.

6.     After the last meeting, 3 research proposals were submitted to the University. We await the outcome.

7.     UCA cannot host the fashion show but are hoping to work with us in some other way. Kirstie is looking at other possibilities.

8.     The Living Library, which in future years will change its name, will be held on Saturday 16th October from 1-5pm. Any volunteers please contact Kay Hadwick, kay.hadwick@surreycc.gov.uk. The library will also be hosting a “Vintage Minds Panel Event” on Wednesday 13th October, when three high-profile authors will talk about books they have written with a health theme. Kay, to whom we owe grateful thanks, will also be discussing possible links with Headley Court.

9.     From attending Beth Hill’s workshop in EMHW09, Lorraine Yates formed Women of Courage, a mainly African choir. We are fortunate that they will be singing during EMHW10.

10.   We hope to hold another panel discussion during the week.

11.   We have invited some high profile people to EMHW10 (replies awaited) and others will be invited, including Jack Ashley (a neuropsychologist); Chris Grayling, Dr Glen Cornish, Colin  Taylor, The Mayor, Fulham or Arsenal Football Club, Alastair Campbell, Fiona Edwards (CEO of Surrey County Council); Jackie Wilson. Other suggestions gratefully received (please contact Kirstie). Organisations to make connection with include Trix Cafe in Stoneleigh and the new Hub in Epsom High Street.

12.   Kirstie will be attending the area Confederation of Head Teachers on Thursday 25th March to discuss EMHW10 and Love Me Love My Mind with them. We are grateful to Diane Lynch for making this possible.

13.   Jackie Clark volunteered to discuss publicity in Partnership People with the Trust. Thank you, Jackie.

14.   Thanks to Paul and Sue Thomson for booking Suntrap to play again.

15.   The venue by the Halifax will be booked, hopefully for the week, as a place for advertising and distribution of information.

Thank you, as ever, for your support. The next meeting is on 26th April from 12 noon – 2pm at St Barnabas. All are very welcome.
