Church Service to begin the week

12noon Welcome by the Mayor of Epsom & Ewell, Councillor Clive Smitherham
12.10pm Opening by Robert Douglas CBE, High Sheriff for Surrey
12.20pm Performances by Laine Theatre Arts
12.45pm Hot lunch (no charge)
1.30pm World record holder Ken Owen and his bed of nails (part 1)
2.00pm Dr Glenn Cornish, psychiatrist and service user, speaks on ‘How to survive as a Mental Health patient or relative’ An opportunity to hear a talk and to ask your questions.
3.00pm Steel band
3.30pm Finale of the bed of nails with Ken Owen
4.00pm Finish with steel band playing us out.

Face painting with Sarah Jenkins
Kim Wisdom, daughter-in-law of Norman Wisdom, will be sharing her experiences of caring for some one with Alzheimer’s.

MONDAY 11 OCTOBER


Spiritual reflection (TBC)

Talk: Living well and losing weight - why is it so difficult?

Time: 10-30-11.45am     Venue: St Barnabas, Temple Road

Professor Linda Morgan, Head of Division Nutritional Sciences at the University of Surrey leads our discussion on why it is so difficult to keep to our diet when we are trying to lose weight, where self-esteem fits into the picture, and other related issues. There will be the opportunity to speak in confidence to Linda.

Jonathan Clark, Mental Health professional and Broadcaster reflects on self-harm and suicide. (wording of this may change)

Chris Taylor, midwife, counsellor and mother speaks on the mother/baby relationship and connections and growth of the infant brain and post natal depression.

TUESDAY 12 OCTOBER

Pamper Session: Title (TBC)

A time for mum’s and babies to come together for some pampering, lunch and the possibility of forming a regular group. (wording may change)

Lunch time Venue (TBC – maybe Atkins)

Mick McCormick and a team from the Faculty of Health & Social Care at The Open University provide a forum for businesses to discuss mental health and well-being. Lunch included. (wording may change)

Talk: Can’t learn, won’t learn, don’t care.

Come and hear Fintan O’Regan, National and International Lecturer on ADHD and related learning difficulties. (wording may change)

 

Talk: Work Stress Solutions: Enhancing skills and confidence in returning to work

Time: 3.15 - 4.15pm     Venue: St Barnabas, Temple Road

The talk by Debbie Brewin, OT, MSc CBT, will be interactive and participation will be encouraged. It will outline:

  • What Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is and how it can help with work related issues
  • How our local Charity, Work Stress Solutions, assists in building skills and confidence

Another opportunity to hear Laura Collins share some of her poetry and to reflect on life’s ups and downs. (wording may change)

Singing for well-being

An inspiring performance by Women of Courage, an opportunity to join in the singing led by the highly gifted Beth Hill, and to dance and sing to some Brazilian Samba music… (wording may change)

Talk: Resilience, better futures for all

Resilience is at the heart of the human success story. It is our best armour against adverse life events and our best hope for the future of our kids. Having it in abundance can even prolong life. Discover how it works, at every level, from the neurobiological to the personal and political, and at the same time learn how to build up your own levels of resilience, so protecting yourself from emotional overload and professional burn out. Talk: Surviving Suicide: a Mother’s experience

Carol Ann Milton shares from the depth of her experience.
 

Panel Event: Window on the Mind

An exciting opportunity to take part in a panel event with authors Adam Foulds, Samantha Harvey, and Gabriel Weston (wording TBC)

THURSDAY 14 OCTOBER

An Asian View of Post Natal Depression and Childhood Mental Health

Nikki den Hollander shares her secrets of how to eat well and stay happy. Includes tasting session!

Rabbi Danny Rich, Chief Executive of Liberal Judaism, shares from the wealth of his experience. (wording and timing TBC)

Talk: Out of Sight, out of Mind? Sources for the history of Surrey’s Mental Hospitals 1770-c1990

It sounds a serious topic but archivist Julian Pooley speaks with entertaining good humour and provides a fascinating insight into our local history. (wording TBC)

 

FRIDAY 15 OCTOBER

Hope where there is no horizon. Caring for those with unremitting illness: a Christian perspective

Time to enter the depths and heights of what it means to be human with Dr Gareth Tuckwell, formerly an Epsom GP and now CEO of Burrswood Hospital. (wording TBC)

SATURDAY 16 OCTOBER

Harvest Celebration Brunch

Time 11.30-2.00pm     Venue: The Old Moat Garden Centre, Horton Lane

Come and sample seasonal dishes created by the Community Chef. Learn to cook tasty healthy food.  Lots of ideas and inspiration. Free!

The Living Library

Time: 12.30-4pm     Venue: Epsom Library, Ebbisham Centre

Real people can be “borrowed” for a 20 minute conversation on many aspects of mental illness.
