Film at the Odeon Cinema - 'Sylvia' with Exhibition
Time: 11.30 Venue: Odeon Cinema Cost: free, but donations on the day welcome
Director Christine Jeffs takes the heartbreaking story of writer Sylvia Plath's life and suicide (which has taken on mythological significance in certain literary circles) and renders it in a palette of surprising beauty. The film paints the story in dark greens, reds and the arresting blues of a recurring water motif. Dealing less with the professional lives of Plath and her husband Edward "Ted" Hughes, and delving more deeply into their notoriously tempestuous marriage, SYLVIA takes risks by attempting to portray what both Plath's family and Hughes (until just before his death in 1998) have remained extremely quiet about. John Brownlow's screenplay fingers no villain, painting both Hughes and Plath as flawed and complex.
Beginning in England in 1956, the film depicts American poet Sylvia (Gwyneth Paltrow)--who has a history of depression and suicide attempts--attending Cambridge University on a Fulbright Scholarship. While at a party, she meets Ted (Daniel Craig), a dashing student and fellow poet. The chemistry between them is electric, and they become immediately inseparable, their mutual love of verse the glue that holds them together. But Sylvia's success in her art gives way to jealous madness as other women lavish their attentions on Ted. Her subsequent descent into the deepest of depressions leads to her suicide in 1962. In this stirring film, Paltrow hits a high note in her career with her portrayal of Sylvia.

Time: 10-11am. Venue: St Barnabas Church, Temple Road, Epsom, Cost: free
The talk will demystify the process of therapy with a focus on therapeutic help for children and young people who are struggling to cope with difficulties in their lives. Alexandra will talk about the kinds of difficulties that therapy can help children with, how therapy can help, what’s involved both in terms of the structure of therapy (how long, how often etc.) and process (what happens in the therapeutic work with the child). Therapy with children rarely involves just talking, but also play, the arts, music etc. She will explain where a parent might look for therapy for their child: e.g. their school may have a counsellor, approaching the GP for a referral to CAMHS, or a private practitioner. She will talk about the likely cost of private counselling or therapy and then finish off with by talking about confidentiality and feedback to parents/carers and/or other involved professionals e.g. G.P.
Summary
What can therapy help with?
How does therapy help?
What’s involved?
Where can I find help?
What will it cost?
How will I know if it’s working?
Film at the Odeon Cinema "A Beautiful Mind" with Exhibition
Time: 11.30 Venue: Odeon Cinema Cost: free, but donations on the day welcome
Director Ron Howard delivers his finest effort with his extraordinary film, A BEAUTIFUL MIND, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2001. Based loosely on Sylvia Nasar's acclaimed biography of mathematician John Forbes Nash, the film is a compelling look at one man's genius, his debilitating mental illness, and the fine line between the two. A BEAUTIFUL MIND begins with Nash (Russell Crowe) at Princeton, where he struggles to think of an original idea, and the stroke of genius that will make him matter. Nash is eccentric, socially awkward, and extremely competitive. Eventually, he finds the inspiration for his innovative and influential work on game theory. He's chosen for a post at MIT, which includes crucial code-breaking work for the US government. There, he meets a beautiful and brilliant student, Alicia (Jennifer Connelly). They marry but their happiness is threatened, as Nash, belatedly diagnosed as schizophrenic, descends into madness. Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman cannily condenses Nash's story, and the film manages to dramatize both Nash's mathematical brilliance and his schizophrenia in a compellingly visual manner. Crowe delivers a strong performance, and has real chemistry with Connelly. The two make the film's story about the power of love believable and moving.
Prose and Poetry Reading: " Still here?" by Laura Collins
Time 12 - 12.30pm Venue: St Barnabas Church, Temple Road Epsom Cost: Free
Laura Collins is a passionate artist, writer, poet, and sometime bongo player.
Through her work Collins attempts to invoke a re-telling of the human condition. She describes the joy, terror, and other feelings or emotions associated with being and existence. She is thoughtful of the move through time, in remembrance of the past and in imagining for the future. Whilst at the same time having an intimate awareness of her own frail mortality. Her work has been described as having the capacity to make us all think. And though her subjects often have a disquietening undercurrent, more recent work has adopted a lighter perhaps more hopefull quality. Laura Collins has an undeniable strength and an amazing capacity for understanding and compassion, a dry sense of humour. And is a testimony to the “ “still here!” Survivors Guide to the Universe!”. See the profiles section for further information.
After her reading Laura will welcome comments or questions. If any could be presented in writing she will doubtless find some way to incorporate them within her ongoing commentary of work .

Roy Waller (Nicolas Cage) is a conman and trickster who has had to overcome enormous problems with obsessive-compulsive disorder in order to stay on top of his game. His partner in crime, Frank Mercer (Sam Rockwell), helps him run a daily business conning housewives out of their money with telephone scams. Frank is frustrated with their small-fry clientele however, and urges Roy to look for bigger business ventures. Roy resists Frank's urges, and instead leads a bizarre existence in which he is completely dominated by his compulsions to clean, eat canned tuna every night, and open his front door three times before he can walk through it. His world is turned upside down, however, when he starts seeing a shrink who helps Roy to get in touch with his missing 14-year-old daughter, Angela (Alison Lohman). Angela soon becomes embroiled in Roy and Frank's scams, pushing Roy to take on a grandiose scheme that could give them financial security for the rest of their lives.
Directed by Ridley Scott, this fast-paced crime drama takes several twists and turns as it works its way towards a surprising conclusion. Cage is perfectly cast as the con artist beset by neuroses and family problems, and has an excellent foil in the younger, more abrasive Rockwell. Weaving a tale of trust, family, friendship and deceit, director Scott utilises the talents of his actors to delve into complicated themes, resulting in a breathtaking film in which nothing can be taken for granted.
